Selecting an Employment Background Screening Vendor

Selecting an Employment Background Screening Vendor

Posted 11/1/2016

When considering an employment background screening company you should only use the best.  I personally know that selecting a new vendor can be time consuming and rigorous.  So what sets one screening company apart from the rest?  Why pick company A over company B?

There are many factors to consider.  However there are some major key points to review.

Is the screening company accredited?
As a minimum your screening partner should hold an Accreditation with the National Association of Professional Background Screeners, BSCC.  (Read more about this process, here.)

Do they have any additional Certifications?
Compliance or Security based? Some of these certifications may not matter in terms of selecting a superior company.  Other certifications can show a level of due diligence and trust.

Is your screening company insured for possible errors?
Can you trust that your screening company can support and stand with you if (God forbid) an error or lawsuit did arise?  Cyber Security Insurance is an additional standard which many organizations may not carry, but is very important.

Does your potential screening vendor have a history of legal issues?
We all make mistakes.  No one is perfect.  However, when your see a pattern of lawsuits you can be sure that the problem is bigger than “just a mistake”.

Does your screening bidder outsource US based information overseas?
With the rising cost of labor in the US, call centers and customer services centers are being relocated overseas.  This isn’t the problem, but do you know where your applicant data is going?  Be sure to be fully educated on these processes.

Is the company large enough to handle your needs?
In a world where bigger is better I don’t necessily agree with that.  But be sure that your potential screening vendor isn’t a one or two man shop that can’t produce when you need 500 screens completed in 3 days.

Does the company work within your budget?
Cost is usually an important concern, but honestly it should be your last.  Companies are always willing to adjust and make you happy.  However, be sure that you are fully aware of any additional court or 3rd party fees.  A respectable screening company should always be willing to share this data with you.

What tools do the potential vendor supply in terms of online ordering, reviewing applicant data, training, reports, etc.?
Are they willing to integrate with an ATS/HRIS, if you choose to switch vendors?

Are they limited as to what services they offer or are they a full service provider?

What is their Customer Service like?
When you have a problem, will you get a call back in an hour, day, week, month… never?  Be sure to get references.  Find out what their current customers think about their service.

Contract terms.
Are you signed into a 1, 2, 5 year deal?  Be sure you know when you can review, renew, or leave your vendor.  Can you make adjustments to your service plan without any repercussion?
