Hiring for Longevity—Instead of Just Hiring to Fill a Seat

You have found the perfect candidate to fill your vacant position. You’ve interviewed him, he fits in with your staff…nothing could go wrong right? Until…he surprisingly quits three months later. Turnover is expensive and finding good candidates is difficult, what could you have done to hire someone you know will be there for the long haul?

As a manager, you know that you want to hire stable and hard-working individuals to keep your team moving in the right direction, so here are some simple tips to help you achieve your standard of stability:

  • Be clear about what the job requires. Make sure your candidates know what they are getting themselves into so they are not overwhelmed or surprised by the position.
  • Ask your candidates what their short/long-term goals are. Find out if they plan to make this their career or if it is just temporary until they get the job they really want.
  • Check the candidate’s work history. Have they really worked where they have said they worked? Have they hopped from job to job? Did they leave their employers on good terms? MBI Worldwide can help you verify your candidate’s employment and references.

When you are hiring, you obviously cannot predict what will happen to every candidate you hire over the next few months, but these simple tips can help you avoid some common pitfalls. MBI’s employment screening services are here to help you make your job easier! Good screening is smart business.
